A quick notice to let everyone know that the nomination period for the 2008 Jolt Awards is now open. I'm a Jolt Awards judge, my second year, while this is the 18th go-around for the awards. The main sponsor is Dr. Dobb's, like Intelligent Enterprise a CMP computing magazine (or is IE a business magazine focusing on computing or is IE a portal rather than a magazine?) The Jolt Awards target various aspects of software development practice: development environments, management and coding tools and utilities, libraries, books, developer networks, and lots more. I'm no longer much of a software developer myself, but then software development isn't what it was when I was a programmer. Nowadays, coding is done within frameworks, preferably following a methodology (or methodologies), using collaborative environments, with strong ties to business goals, IT architectures, and enterprise integration. The official criterion for Jolt-Worthiness? Dr. Dobb's Journal invites all vendors to participate in the 18th Annual Jolt Product Excellence Awards. We're looking for products, books, and Web sites that have "jolted" the software development industry in 2007.Myself, I'd like to see more entries in/around the analytics and enterprise-application spaces that I and Intelligent Enterprise specialize in. Last year's Productivity Award winners include a number of vendors in those spaces: Coral8 in the Database Engines and Data Tools category; Corticon Business Rules Modeling Studio in Design and Modeling Tools; ILOG JViews in Libraries, Frameworks and Components; Wolfram Workbench in Development Environments; and Pentaho Open BI Suite in Enterprise Tools. Jolt nominations close December 3, 2007. The judges will take a first look, and DDJ will announce finalists in December. We judges do more of our thing — demos and hands-on trials and a lot of discussion — to come up with the winners. DDJ will present the awards at the SD Web conference, March 3-7, 2008.
