IBM Releases 'Viper 2' Beta for DB2 9
Customer and partner testing of the next release of the DB2 9 database began last week as IBM unveiled the beta version of what's code named "Viper 2." The update is said to offer enhanced security and workload management features including: Introduced less than a year ago, DB2 9's big advance was the ability to simultaneously manage both XML and relational data, which offers an advantage in managing documents and other content types alongside structured data. That's not a unique capability, says Gartner database analyst Donald Feinberg, as Sybase and Microsoft databases also handle both data types, but IBM did gain an edge against the database marketshare leader – at least temporarily. "Oracle sort of [supports XML] now, but 11g will have full native XML support," said Feinberg in a recent interview with Intelligent Enterprise. Oracle's 11g release is expected as soon as next week.
