Maturing SOA Tools
Technology used to build service-oriented architectures is showing signs of maturity. While vendors still have a ways to go in developing the necessary tools for building an enterprise-class SOA, they're starting to deliver products that have more substance than hype. Layer 7 Technologies was one of those vendors this week, introducing clustered security for companies deploying SOAs, a form of distributed computing that loosely couples systems via standard technologies based on extensible markup language, or XML. Clustered security means companies using Layer 7's upgrade of the 3.5 Security operating system for its family of firewalls and gateways can manage and enforce rules across the vendor's security products. As a result, IT staff can distribute rule changes from a central location, rather than reconfiguring each security device on a network. Ron Schmelzer, analyst for researcher ZapThink LLC, called the new capabilities "pretty advanced," and said Layer 7 reflected a trend toward less hype in the SOA market. "It's not so much sizzle now. It's more meat," he said. Drop me an email to let me know what you think. E-MAIL | SLASHDOT | DIGG This is a public forum.
