Taking BI To The Masses

Cognos acknowledges business intelligence apps haven't been very useful for the corporate rank and file. With user interfaces built for business analysts, BI software has been less than user friendly for most workers. In fact, only about one in five corporate employees use the software, according to the Canadian software maker.

To change that, Cognos has partnered with IBM and Google to connect their separate search engines to Cognos 8 Business Intelligence. The way Cognos sees it, everyone knows how to use search, so adding BI content to results should make the information easily available to anyone in the company who needs it.

Don Campbell, vice president of platform strategy and technologies at Cognos, told me the company plans to continue pushing BI content across the enterprise, which he believes is "going to be key to BI growth in the coming years."

Maybe. Making it easy to find content is certainly the first step, but presenting relevant content and making it easy to understand for someone without an MBA is another matter. We'll have to wait and see how many more people in companies actually take advantage of the new capabilities, which are set to ship in May within the Cognos Go Search Service.
