Can Oracle Be Trusted With Business Intelligence?
Oracle's business intelligence strategy appears to be coming together. The database giant says it plans to take recently acquired Siebel Business Analytics and make it the foundation for its BI products, which will include integration between Oracle Discoverer and the Siebel Analytic Server. Delivery of the combination is set for the first quarter of 2007. But can Oracle be trusted to deliver? Ventana Research says it likes the plan, but recommends getting everything down on paper before committing to the sometimes flaky Oracle. Before signing up, Oracle customers should first get a detailed roadmap, Ventana says. New customers, on the other hand, should ask the vendor for proof of its long-term commitment. No one is saying Oracle isn't serious this time, but that doesn't mean customers shouldn't demand more than press releases. Meanwhile, IT employment is at its highest level ever, according to an analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data by InformationWeek. IT employment in the U.S. reached a record of 3.472 million workers at the end of March 31, beating out the peak in the dot.com boom.
