Performance Management Unbound
Cognos found itself at the center of criticism from its rivals when it introduced Cognos 8. The reason: The BI vendor's new product release, competitors said, largely abandoned any focus on performance management. But anyone who thought Cognos' move was an indication of things to come from other BI firms has been proven wrong. Two new products came down the pike this week. Both are focused explicitly on the business performance management (BPM) market, and both use a Web interface to make BI and BPM available to more users. Hyperion on Tuesday debuted Hyperion System 9, which includes a new Web-based interface that acts as a portal to the vendor's enterprise planning, financial reporting, and business analysis applications. The interactive workspace provides a means of sharing information between those applications for monitoring performance metrics and using the findings for strategic planning -- the essence of BPM. The same day, Hyperion's smaller rival Applix followed suit with TM1 9.0, its own upgrade to a flagship BI and BPM product. Like Hyperion System 9, TM1 9.0 includes a Web-based focus on BPM. The tool is based on Microsoft's .Net architecture and is designed to let financial analysts, line-of-business managers and executives carry out BPM tasks either locally or remotely.
