Open Source Climbs The BI Stack

BI pros know open-source has made headway on the reporting side of business intelligence and among databases. But ambitious efforts are underway to bring more complete BI platforms that are built around open source. This week, we show you exactly how far those plans go.

Pentaho and JasperSoft either already offer or plan to make available BI applications that go far beyond simple reporting, as our Business Intelligence Pipeline in-depth overview of the products explains.

Pentaho plans to roll out almost an entire business intelligence tool set from top to bottom: reporting, OLAP analysis, data mining, dashboards and workflow capabilities. Only extract, transform and load (ETL) capabilities are missing from the planned stack, which is set for a gradual rollout between now and December. JasperSoft, while less ambitious than Pentaho, still goes beyond reporting to include OLAP analytics and workflow capabilities. It also has completed and usable products that are available now.

Pentaho and JasperSoft aren't alone, of course. This summer software maker Actuate announced the availability of BIRT 1.0, an Eclipse-based, open-source, 100 percent Java reporting platform. We're also bringing you a new overview of BIRT (Business Intelligence Reporting Tools) 1.0 this week. Ventana Research, which provided the review along with our sister publication Intelligent Enterprise, recommends that developers of Java-based application projects that require reporting give the BIRT tool a long look.

For more reviews and nitty-gritty assessments of BI tools and practices, check out the Hands On section of Business Intelligence Pipeline, which will continue to compile techniques, tips and reviews that can help just about any practitioner of BI or business process management.
