What Is Business Technology Optimization?

Mercury Interactive Corp. coined the term "Business Technology Optimization," or BTO, as an umbrella for all its products going forward. "BTO" alludes to business process optimization, which uses IT to institute and refine best practices that support returns on business operations. Like the cobbler who's left his children shoeless, Mercury execs contend, IT should afford itself the same benefits it has long provided to business.

BTO is targeted at solving typical IT problems: late projects, missed budgets, unmet objectives, and project cancellations. As part of the BTO blueprint, existing and planned Mercury products fall into four categories or "Centers": IT Governance, Quality, Performance, and Business Availability. New products have automation, best practice guidance, key performance indicators, and access to workflow and rules engines that keep IT projects on target.

These products include: an Application Delivery Dashboard that lets IT execs monitor performance of IT operations; Business Process Testing, a Quality Center piece that lets business analysts participate in testing of new apps; Capacity Planning, a Performance Center piece providing what-if analysis for infrastructure and software planning; and Customer Impact from the Business Availability Center, which helps you prioritize maintenance and service of apps by their business-level importance. The underlying Application Management Foundation has new capabilities, such as workflow and shared data that coordinate all the various IT functions through the application life cycle.
